What began as a family's deep-seated love for coffee has blossomed into Coffee World, a name now synonymous with quality and ethical practices on a global stage.

The legacy of Coffee World is deeply rooted in our family's history, spanning generations of dedication to the coffee trade. It all began with our grandfather, Late Kigonya Gideon, who cultivated connections with women farmers in and around Nkokonjeru and neighbouring villages.

The journey continued with our fathers, who expanded our enterprise by constructing grading plants and venturing into international markets. Through these endeavours, our family secured not only our livelihoods, but also our education.

Today, Coffee World Ltd stands as a testament to our family's enduring commitment to coffee and the empowerment of women in the industry. We prioritise women and families in every aspect of our business, as women's role is integral to the wellbeing of families and communities.

Championing the Role of Women in the Ugandan Coffee Industry

Pross Ann Mayanja has been the Managing Director of Coffee World Ltd since December 2008, when she started leading the charge in establishing Coffee World Ltd as a women-led coffee exporting enterprise.

In addition to her pivotal role at Coffee World Ltd, Pross Ann Mayanja is actively involved in collaborative efforts to bolster the Ugandan coffee sector. She collaborates with local organisations such as the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) and the National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI) on various initiatives aimed at:

  • Enhancing access to high-quality Arabica and Robusta coffee seedlings for farmers.
  • Establishing nurseries and distributing disease-resistant Robusta coffee varieties.
  • Evaluating and purifying Arabica seed lots to ensure genetic integrity.

These initiatives are meticulously crafted to enhance coffee production and productivity in Uganda, aligning with the country's ambitious objectives of quadrupling coffee output. Her active involvement underscores her unwavering dedication to the advancement of the Ugandan coffee industry. Our journey from a humble family enterprise to a renowned coffee brand is a testament to our resilience, values, and sense of community. At the core of Coffee World lies a commitment to sourcing coffee from women farmers and promoting their wellbeing. Our expansion is not merely about business growth, but about fostering enduring relationships and community bonds that imbue our coffee with true significance.

At Coffee World, we believe in the life-changing potential of our coffee to spark opportunity in every community it reaches. Our goal is to cultivate a brighter future for our local women farmers and their families, who often work on plots smaller than 1 hectare. Our legacy isn't just about business success; it's about the positive impact we make in the lives of those we serve.

Our coffee. Our nation – a source of national pride

In Uganda, coffee isn't just a beverage; it's a symbol of national pride and the backbone of most rural households. As Africa's leading exporter, our nation excels in Robusta production, renowned for its exceptional quality due to our fertile soil and precise farming practices. Coffee sustains 1.7 million households, playing a pivotal role in our economy. With the roadmap aiming for 20 million bags annually by 2030, Uganda is poised to lead the global coffee market. At Coffee World, we're proud to contribute to this vision through strategic initiatives, ensuring a sustainable future for Uganda's coffee industry.

Collaboration at Our Core: We're not just working with coffee farmers; we're building partnerships that matter. Our focus on small and productive farms, primarily run by women, is a conscious choice. This cooperative model bolsters local economies, supporting families and uplifting communities from poverty.

Cultivating Change with a Focus on Quality and Positive Impact. Our commitment is twofold: producing exceptional coffee and driving meaningful change, particularly enriching the lives of women at the heart of our coffee farming communities.

Access to Resources: We're opening new paths for female coffee farmers, providing them with essential credit. This financial support empowers them to rejuvenate their coffee fields, plant more seedlings, and purchase vital inputs. Our goal? To cultivate coffee that's not just high in quality but also enriches the lives of those who grow it.

Enhancing Skills: Knowledge is power. We provide comprehensive training in sustainable coffee production, effective post-harvest techniques, and smart fertiliser usage. These skills are crucial for improving coffee quality and yield, directly boosting the farmers' income and community prosperity.

Cooperative Leadership: We're advocates for women's voices in the coffee industry. By increasing female representation and leadership within coffee cooperatives, we ensure that women have a significant say in the planning and supply chain of coffee production. This empowerment leads to more equitable and sustainable farming practices.

National Advocacy and Engagement: Recognising the broader national impact, we engage in advocacy and policy dialogues to champion the needs of women in agriculture. By collaborating with national stakeholders, we aim to influence policies and practices that support gender equality and sustainable farming across the country.

We're not just nurturing coffee; we're nurturing change. Our efforts are dedicated to creating a more equitable, prosperous coffee industry that benefits everyone, from the local farmer to the national economy.

Our Mission

Our mission remains unwavering: to meticulously select the finest coffee cherries and green beans from farmers and traders across Uganda. To empower women and youth, and to raise awareness and funds for women in coffee.

With determination akin to that of our grandfathers, we established a hulling plant and became suppliers to the Coffee Marketing Board. Since our re-establishment in 2008, Coffee World Ltd has operated as a family-driven enterprise, propelled by a profound passion and knowledge of the coffee industry.

At Coffee World, we're in the business of change, and our mission is clear: to empower women, the backbone of our coffee production, ensuring they benefit from every bean sold. By providing them with the right tools and training, we ensure they grow with us. With transparency and sustainability as our guiding principles, every step, from planting to milling, is ethical, transparent, and environmentally friendly.
